What is VA-LEND?
The Virginia Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities program (Va-LEND) provides interdisciplinary training to professionals, family members, and self-advocates. The program aims to train diverse professionals to meet the needs of children with neurodevelopmental disabilities and their families in a variety of healthcare, social service, and educational settings.
Disciplines
The Va-LEND faculty, students, and trainees represent 16 disciplines from 6 Schools at Virginia Commonwealth University, Longwood University, and community organizations in Virginia. We also work closely with community partners to create a comprehensive training interprofessional opportunity.
Training
The statewide virtual program provides 12-24 months of interactive seminars, clinical and community-based experience, policy activities, and a family mentorship experience. The curriculum emphasizes all aspects of neurodevelopmental and related disabilities across the life course. Students gain skills based on the MCH Leadership Competencies, focusing on interdisciplinary teamwork and leadership.
Impact
Va-LEND aims to prepare trainees for clinical and leadership roles in the maternal and child health workforce. We are proud to provide financial support to at least 19 trainees annually, many of whom earn a Certificate in Disability Leadership. Va-LEND faculty have prepared over 850 professionals to serve people with neurodevelopmental disabilities and their families in the program's lifetime.
